The Cafe Bayway Experience

For 5 weeks we were fortunate to have our own café here in the community hall. This was an initiative of Job quest, who set up programmes to encourage kids to stay at school and achieve their HSC. We had 18 students from Callaghan College, Jesmond Campus. Some spent time in the Men’s Shed, and under the guidance of the men they made and painted possum homes.

The other students spent their time in the café, they made their own menus, planned the café and cooked food and served it with tea and coffee.  I’m sure our favourite day was the last one with the menu consisting of bacon and egg rolls, pancakes with maple syrup and Jason’s special fried rice. The students were very polite and friendly and had all residents laughing with their unique calling at Bingo!

Many thanks to the residents who supported the students and their café, you have helped them achieve some of their goals and hugely increased their self esteem and confidence.

Hopefully we can do it all again.
